Hi Families,
Division 10 and 11 are studying Simple Machines as part of our Science Theme work this term. They have been learning about the 6 simple machines and how they make work easier. We are now starting a project where students are asked to invent their own simple or compound machines. Below are their instructions:
Parents, we need your help by collecting materials at home or at the store if needed. These should not be expensive materials as their inventions will be simple versions of their designs. Examples of materials would be: Elastics, wooden spools, duct tape, dowels, corrugated paper, strings etc. Please bring materials in on Tuesday Feb.14. They will be given 2-3 weeks to design, experiment and build their machines during our Science theme time. It would be beneficial if students continue their exploration at home and share their successes and problem solving as they enjoy their process. Researching some designs online is also helpful. Here is one link we have found useful for some good ideas for designing simple machines. http://pbskids.org/designsquad/parentseducators/resources/index.html?category=simplemachines Happy engineering everybody. Valentines Day is fast approaching! If your child would like to hand out Valentine cards, please ensure they have one for every student. We have a total of 24 students in Division 10. I will be sending home a list of names this Friday. Thank-you! Here is a sample of the creative Valentine bags students have made in preparation for the big day!
Poetry cafe was a great success! We arranged the desks into a semi-circle, sipped cinnamon tea, dimmed the lights and lit our tealight candles. Students were eager to share their poetry, or favourite poems from home and equally eager to offer thoughtful responses. The class is working on voice projection, and expression, but these things will come with practice and time. (click images to enlarge)
Hello Families!
Next week is Spirit Week at Dickens, here's a look at what student council has planned... Monday- Hat and shades day Tuesday- Jersey or favourite t-shirt day Wednesday- Famous person day Thursday- Crazy hair day Friday- Sleepy day (pj's) Today two men from the Vancouver Stealth Professional Lacrosse Team paid us a visit. Students learned that Lacrosse is our national sport, and that it was invented by Canadian First Nations people. During P.E. everyone had a chance to develop some Lacrosse skills- we had a great time, and many expressed an interest in playing lacrosse again!
Hello there!
We are starting a new science unit during Theme block- Simple Machines! Students started with a brief review and discovery project. From there we will move into simple machines explorations. Starting next week we need to compile some basic materials. I'm able to supply most of the items required, but if you have any of the following items, please send them along:
We had a great time skating this morning. A big thank-you to the parents who came along for the walk, and helped with skates!
Our field trip to the Vancouver Art Gallery was a great success! Students experienced a wide range of conceptual multi-media art pieces, took part in discussions, studied line/pattern through sketching, and finished off with a mixed media workshop. I hope you enjoy the pictures. A big thank-you to all parent volunteers, we couldn't have done it without you! Hello Families,
